Why does your boss micromanage

The P&G chief says that bosses/leaders micromanage because "they aren't busy enough". Actually, I felt exactly the same almost two years back, when I was being micromanaged. I used to feel "How on earth do they (bosses) find all day to sit on my head and meddle with what I am doing, don't they have a real job". The point is that leaders need to understand that their job is not only to lead their subordinates, it is also to lead themselves. At times, micromanagement is required, but at times, it's just too irritating.

Why do people micromanage in companies:
  1. They don't trust their new recruit that much - if you don't trust him that much, why recruit him on the first place. Or, why don't you train him and them put him on the job.
  2. The accountability is not pushed further down to lower levels in the organization - If your boss is the only face of the team, then she is accountable for everything in the team; and she has to sit on your head and make sure everything is working as it should be. The best solution for a leader/boss is to push the accountability further down to lower levels.
  3. Because your leader had been micromanaged by his bosses - this is just too bad, you suffered in the beginning, you know how sick micromanaging can get for some people; but because you were micromanaged for years by your boss, you started to enjoy the pain, and now you want the same thing for your subordinates. This is an epidemic.
  4. Your company recruited you to micromanage - this is just a helpless situation, your job is to micromanage people...frankly, I don't consider that a job, but still you are just doing your job.
As you see, it's not your boss all that time, sometimes it is your company, and sometimes it is you who encourages micromanagement.
