AGILE – Change is the new constant

I am a hard-core practitioner of Agile, nah! I am just kidding ;-). I am a rookie who started working on an AGILE project . But mind it! I am great at hindsight, I thought AGILE process is exactly what it sounded like, flexible and quick. Guess what! I was bang on, it is exactly that. Let’s talk a little geek for some time, we implement AGILE because our customers want substantial and visible results incrementally, in waterfall model , we take up a project and then deliver a product by the end of an year. With Agile, we keep delivering functionalities in increments. Our customers know what the product is like, what is the kind of development that’s happening, and what estimates are erroneous and what needs to changed or tweaked. Apply this to your day to day work, what if your boss comes and tells you that ’ you didn't perform well last year and that’s exactly why you are getting a low increment ’ - wouldn't is psyche you (to me, it would). Likewise, your cus...

Trying to be up-to-date

Image
I am sure even you are trying to be up-to-date with something or the other. This urge to be up to date all the time is just killing me. I have around 500 articles to read every day in my RSS reader, I’ve subscribed to over 10 Google alerts that needs a lot of reading, and I am really trying to be active on LinkedIn, Facebook, Quora groups to not miss out on important information. There is this never ending list of things I do every day to just catch up, or maybe there is this fear of getting out of touch with a few things I like . Just a few minutes back I finished reading the book FOCUS . I think this was especially for guys like me who have an urge to be up to date all the time. The fact is , I cannot consume all the updates in the Internet, and a lot of things I consume end up being spam , which is really not good for my health. Once and for all, I have decided not to try to be up to date all the time, instead, get a life and focus on the all the updates I am able to consume i...

Pamela Anderson | My trainer | Assets

If you are a reader who came here after looking at the title of this post, then lemme tell you this – Pamela Anderson is not my trainer, nor am I gonna talk about her Assets ;-), although, it’s a pleasure discussing it. But, hey! You can still read it, it’s just a few lines about why you should not show your assets completely . I had written about the same thing before, you've got to read this article . There was this incident in the gym today, it’s been happening for a while and now it’s just too frustrating. What is it? My trainer has a very nice built, he’s got muscles coming out of him from all different directions, hats off to him…But, he keeps on flexing his muscles and looking at himself all the time – which is nowhere in his job description. My point : If you are good at something, make sure you don’t explicitly show it off to the rest of the world . Certain things are best semi-hidden and it’s good to give tidbits of your talent every once in a while, not every ti...

Going forward, it's AGILE

I belong to an office that has just identified Agile framework for it's projects, we had a superb Agile discussion along with people from different offices . Mind it! it is not a new concept, people have been using Agile framework for over 10 years now. Whoever invented it, thanks a lot, and really sorry on behalf of those who got burned out because of the agile way of working . Scrums and sprints are the two most fabulous terms I get to hear in the meetings. Scrums are quick weekly or bi-weekly meetings where the Scrum master decides who is going to do what before the next scrum. Though, estimation is set by individuals, the scrum master delegates all the work. I feel it is a really an aggressive model to get things done, the measure is really good, you know what you got done in every one-two weeks. Sprints is what happens from one scrum to the other scrum. Scrums are about work completion, result measurement, quick response management. I wonder if this framework does...

Leave it up to them to realize

You've been trying to tell someone the same thing again and again, because as a third person you get a better picture of whats wrong and how to correct it , and sometimes it's just a  been-there-done-that situation and you know exactly what to do to sail smooth in that situation. But unfortunately, your help is of no use because they still end up doing the same mistake. H ow much ever you try, you won't be able to make people realize something unless your a celebrity who people follow blindly - which is very unlikely. So, if you see your friend always making the same mistake, always doing the same things and expecting different results, always getting annoyed for the same reason , always unconsciously doing something unrealistic ...then what you need to do is just let it be , don't try to correct anything or add your expert comments/views, how much ever you try, you won't be able to help her , you know why? coz those who want to do the right thing would do it...

Don't overdo it on the first day

If you are starting something today, and it’s a job that needs you to thrive for months together then don’t overdo it on the first day. You end up overwhelming yourself with work and then your momentum drastically goes down . Don’t do this mistake of overdoing it on the first day, I did it and I know how I got tired of it and eventually left it. It’s a marathon, not a 100 meter race, you start running slowly for the first few kilometers then you speed up and go steadily to finish the race. As they say, consistency is the name of the game… I say , they are god damn right ;-). Let the enthusiasm be in you till the end, finish it one block at a time. We all prepare for something or the other on a daily basis, let’s say, you just joined a gym, you start doing weights, 30 minutes treadmill, 20 minutes cycling and all that on the first day. Guess what! you din't turn up the next day ;-).

5 minutes to reflect

that's just about how much you need to see what could have possible gone wrong or right in a 8 hr work week. There is just so much that you can do in 8 hrs of office time, it's really wise to just make use of the last 5 minutes of the day to reflect on all that happened ( sounds old school, but it still makes total sense coz unfortunately we don't have a software for this ). What is there to reflect on : Could have done better | Will not do like that again | Doesn't work this way | He is good at that | She is not so helpful with this | This time of the day is perfect for doing this | what you said, what they heard . If we don't pause to think about it, we are apt to overlook these kinds of communications. And we often do. But in a world where we depend on others to achieve anything in life, they are essential. This post is all that I could think of when I read this HBR post , you gotta read this if you still haven't.

Switch off and recharge

not just your cellphone or your iPod, but yourself. It's time to  take a chill pill , you'd realize this only when someone close to us gets affected. It's very common to find a kid not swimming in the pool coz someone in his family had an accident while swimming, and kids who din't get a bike to drive till they are 25, coz their parents had some terrible experience with bikes. You understand the severity only when someone who really matters gets affected, that explains why we still don't we care about global warming . 31st night was a helluva party, too much dance, drinks, driving and fights (just verbal). As usual, next day I had a terrible hangover, and then there were relatives at home and just when they were out, I had to meet someone in some other part of city. Before I know, I gotta sleep and getup early to reach my office. I think it's good if you could just relax and not care about your tight schedule, also, you are responsible for this tigh...

What you said, what they heard

Image
What you said - I have worked for a lot of clients, there has not been a single problem with my work. I like challenges and I am always work oriented, I even work on weekends to improve on leading technologies. What I just heard - I have never worked in a team, never had a demanding client, never had tight schedules, never felt like it was too much work, never got any negative feedback coz I dint do anything that challenging, and ya, I don't have a life as I prefer to work on weekends. What you said - I know that technology, I can answer your questions ( Conscience - I actually don't know about it, but lemme just try ) What I just heard - I don't know, I am just trying. I cant accept the fact that I don't know what you just asked. What is my point with all this - usually, what you say is not what I hear . A good lesson for all those ( including...wait!...especially me ) who think that accepting a mistake and not admitting a glaring flaw works in their fa...

The busier the better

Image
If you wanna get something done, give it to a busy person . More than often this theory applies to what we do.  Free time, Choice, Laziness, Money - A lot of these things have the power of compounding ( Buy Book ). There will be a guy who just cant resist going to sleep early or take a nap every hour. There is this other guy who just cant stop stretching or doing tomorrows work today. So what does that tell you? The busier the better ;-). There is this blast of energy that comes with being busy. A sense of urgency ( Buy Book ) is really the whole key.

Easiest way to make sense

Image
How about you sell this to someone else and then come to me with their feedback, that way I'll feel a lot better (In other words, affiliate marketing). You need to make one good sale to brag about it to the next potential customer. Similarly, when talking or writing about something, if you can give a good reference, then there is nothing like it. People believe you if you back your idea with a reference. It's a fact if you believe in it. Google uses this concept to rank pages online i.e. if other websites talk about your website/web page, you are deemed to be a good source. People might talk crap about you, but still, people take an effort to praise/curse you. If other sites refer you, then you are relevant. The easiest way to make sense - get a reference or a recommendation.

Science Express - Opportunity

Image
Freshies (and interested professionals) can digg this opportunity at SCIENCE EXPRESS ;-). If you want exposure, people skills, travel and fun, and lots of learning, then this is the right launch pad . Click the image to enlarge I don't see this as a job opportunity, for me the USP is that the employees will be living out of a suitcase for around 5-7 months (I always wanted to do that after college, not so much now), and of course, travel the country for free. On the other side, it has a lot of turn offs for guys who have a comfortable routine; those who wanna break away from the busy city life should capitalize on this opportunity. PS: I am no HR, I am not associated with Vikram Sarabhai Community Center ; I posted this opening coz I found it really cool for guys who are just out of college. If I were just out of college, I would have applied for this.

Temple- To go or not

Temples give you a good think time coz they are clean & maintain silence. But, when the temples are far off, we need to schedule our visit. It's really well said that you should go to a temple only if you are really interested and if you have belief in whoever is that you are praying. If you dont want to go to a temple today, no harm in postponing your visit to some other day. Similarly, if circumstances are not good and there are other factors hindering your visit on any particular day, It's wise to postpone your visit. BUT WHY? AN INCIDENT Morning, my father went to his office and was all set to start at 3:00pm to Srisailam which is a 4-5hr drive from Hyderabad. His colleagues did not want him to go on this weekend due to some work, But, just because everything was planned, he dint care to think of cancelling the trip. I was not at all interested as I had already seen the place. On the first place, I was not even a part of this trip as one of my...

Negotiating career needs

It was never like " I am new to the corporate " and Now with a blink of an eye, it’s almost 20 months to the different places I've worked a.k.a spent time. I remember back in college , I was up and ready to do any garbage work as long as the company is willing to load my pockets, now times have changed and there are a few more things to weigh before I can take the plunge, for instance: bonuses, profile, scope of work, authority, location & of course compensation matters a lot .   Sticking at one place/office is really essential, I know it!! I've had to leave a profile which I'd been waiting for around 6-7 months, not that I sacrificed anything but the decision was a tough one. BTW I have no regrets right now, may be later ;-)...way to go!   Still there is room for change and I am always on a look out. I attend interviews like its some weekend getaway. It’s pretty insensible for a person to keep looking out but not take up the opportuniti...

WISE talk

Into immense  brain storming and self-realization , there is always this one thing which you need to know the most and that's the one thing which is inherent but undiscovered. We just gotta scoop it out through some serious thinking. For all  the souls who know me , know that I'm desperately seeking out a thing for over 5-6 months and now, after such a chase, I find myself in the correct path, doing the correct things; the only thing which will put an end to this chase is the result. Sometimes the destination is not as important as the amount of travel which took to reach there (ref: my chase and the thing I'm seeking) A  CEO from an IT company  (SME) told one thing bluntly after I was dripping with enthusiasm in my talks about WHAT I WANT?...the guy simply said: Your interested in doing that but people should be interested in paying you for that I am very convinced that, guys of your age don’t know what they actually want, it...

Plans need time

Image
People are all cracked up about noticing the need of the hour, but the main juice lies in the power of execution. We tend to come across a lot of things which might really be an invention or some out of the box thought, but until & unless you broadcast it to others, it remains a thing in our head which is deprived of exposure. The first thing you need to do about a plan is to summarize it somewhere so that even if it skips ur memory, u have a good document to refer and refresh. You cant judge the power of that plan & u don't want to see some other guy being successful doing the same. Lately, everything I am going thru or everywhere I've been; I somehow try making some business sense out of it & unless I don't find any, it seems lame and fit for nothing. I have made around hundreds of plans sitting just besides my friends thinking its some million dollar idea but never have I tried to communicate to others and get to action. I like writing (miserable at grammar, ...

'dont have time' Really!!

Image
Would you please shut the F up!! People use this line 'don't/dint have time' quiet often, it's just a part of every god damn conversation. Do your shitty stuff all day & then run short of time to do what you gotta do on the first place. I am no saint but I am self complacent with the way I spent/invest my time..;-)..wise ass!! Needless to say, the main cause of the line 'dint/don't have time' is improper prioritization of work . We tend to do stuff which is the easiest then head towards what sucks the most (that's really who it is right!!); In the same line, we do the least important things first and save the most important ones for the last...that's really sick, really really sick. Don't procrastinate !! ( hah !!...you pervert, I know it sounds funny), if you do procrastinate (again!), it's all because you don't prioritize. Whatever it is, prioritize man! That's really a life saver, it takes time but the time is really well spe...

'IDEAS' no big deal

Everyone is this freaking planet has an idea about something or the other, advises & ideas are in plenty. Each one of us can relate to a subject/business & put in some effort to make it lucrative. So, there is nothing jaw dropping about someone having a business plan & the so called Idea , as a matter of fact even I've a couple (actually more than a couple) business plans in my mind (some even on paper). let me repeat it for the 7 millionth time!! every possible thing has been there and done before , so, these ideas have already been pondered upon & realistically it brings out no earth shattering stuff from within. What really matters is executing or at least simulating those ideas to bring it closer to reality. Have an IDEA ( no big deal ) Know how to execute it ( good ) Really make people to get some sense out of that execution ( eureka )--- this is the climax Of all the things I read about business, I clearly see that 'out of the box' thinking is not wha...

Good time, Bad times

Its well said " hope for the best & there is always something better to follow" . I totally agree 2 it but I fell there has to be a asynchronous saying like "hope the present is good & there is always something worse to follow" . The later statement really counts for people like me coz I have found myself in some best of the phases of life but still have not recognized its value (actually, I am still in one of those best phases).  At times I think the present is full of negatives & its not how I exactly I want ( in the drive to visualize euphoria, I forget me actually being in it ). But, later on when that phase ends, I conclude that the present one is not as good as the earlier one. Thats how it used to be, but now I hang on to that statement thinking that "now its best & there are worse things 2 follow". So, I gotta enjoy & go with a thought of me being lucky always (coz thats more like it). PS: I dont believe in palmistry but there...

I am doing great

Image
Individuality is the thing which everyone craves & that's the one thing which people loose as the years pass; but this psyched head of mine has stored that in its safe & this is something I ain't loosing for any serious fuck or for any inspirational character in this world ( coz what the hell, I can be inspirational to a lot of souls for what I am right now) Remember  the golden words mouthed by  Popeye  the sailor man  " "I yam what I yam and that's all what I yam !"  Most of the times, I indulge in self scrutiny which is of course a good thing but in that phase I loose my own trademark traits & become someone who is good or probably great butttttt way different from my true self. So, that's something which needs to be taken care off i.e. In the quest to be better, I am loosing my true identity; so instead of that  artificial upbringing I should try modifying my built in aspects & strictly not hamper the default once to keep the true me...
