How to get someone to join the club a.k.a how motivatoin works

I am working on a short article that gets people to join the club (in other words, a marketing text). While doing the assignment and discussing about the article with a friend, I got to know something really cool about how motivation works.

Primarily, there are two ways of motivating you to get you (again, to get you) to join the club/community:
  1. The exclusive bait: By telling you that "you are one of the very few who joins". That is, you are exclusive.
  2. The herd bait: By telling you that "there are a lot of people (just like you) who have joined and are enjoying". That is, you can safely join because many people have already joined.
For instance, if you want a boy to join the kung-fu club, you gotta tell him "not many people join this club and that it's great to have you join". The boy is motivated and is likely to join because he thinks "he is exclusive and that he will be one of the very few to do it".

And, if you want a man to invest in your business, you gotta tell him "a lot of people (just like you) have joined, and that it's great to have you join". The man is motivated because he thinks "I can safely join the business. My investing in the business is safe as so many others are doing it".

The point is, the exclusive bait works always provided it's done properly, but the herd bait works only when trust is a factor. Think about it.

PS: By the way, don't fall for any bait. Join the club/community that you really wish to join (this type of motivation is called intrinsic motivation).
