Nothing wrong with the old-fashioned courtesy
But the fact remains; it IS old fashioned. Anything that is passé is avoided, there is ‘a new courtesy’ that people opt for, it’s really not about formality instead it’s pretty straight forward i.e. we don’t just greet people for the sake of greeting them. So instead of saying “Hi ! How are you” to our colleagues who we see every day, we say “Hey!”. When we bump into an old friend. We don’t say ”long time! How have you been” coz most probably we are following their activities on facebook or twitter, so we just say “how come this place, I thought you were living in some other city”… all attributed to a pinch of courtesy. You see, being informal is the new way of being courteous. May be not for everyone but, surely for guys who are in their 20s now, our circle is pretty intact and we have very little scope to lose friends.
And of course, at times, you just bump into someone who you don’t follow anywhere, that’s when the old-fashioned courtesy in you kicks in. In all honesty, this has almost never happened to me, I never got to make use of the old-fashioned courtesy till now. But, I still see that a lot of us use the old-fashioned courtesy… with all due respect, it’s not really necessary.
