You'll fail, now prove me wrong
Does your boss/parent/colleague/friend tell you something like "you are fit for nothing (inner voice: prove me wrong)", "you can't compete (inner voice: prove me wrong)", or "you will fail (inner voice: prove me wrong)". If so, tell them that this is not the right way to motivate. Their intentions are very good but, the way they're speaking ain't working. You can't expect your employee/son to succeed because of your open challenge.
This is the kind of motivational talk that comes from Indian parents (or maybe everyone), I've seen a lot of parents telling their kids "look at her, she's so good in academics, you're not even close to coming first (inner voice: now that I've said, prove me wrong)". This is not working, stop it people ;-). Even if this works, it's not the right way to get the best out of your kid. There are better ways to motivate...I am not saying anything, you know what's best for your kid.
PS: I had a deja vu today ;-P, I took the stairs and on my way out, I heard a very unhappy-with-results mommy shouting at her son "keep watching cricket all the time, that's all you can do right (inner voice: go study and prove me wrong)".
