Peers might be spoiling adult learning
There is this saying that a lot of students learn most of the things from there peers. This is very true for all the professionals too. At work place, it is very clear that there are some knowledge workers, if I may call them that, who dispense knowledge in their group.
Leave aside opinions and views, they are of the personal nature. Coming to facts, the thing about the knowledge worker's knowledge is that it is difficult for others to identify if what they are saying is factually correct; at the very moment they say it. And many a times, we don't even bother checking the validity of the statements or the so-called-facts. This is very harmful for our learning process as we are learning wrong things.
How to correct this?
I have found that almost always these things make it certain if the thing being discussed is an opinion or a fact: What kind of qualifying phrase is the speaker using, What happens when you ask, in an investigative way, the speaker to repeat the sentence, and Why not ask Google in the name of searching minor details on the subject.
