WTF: At work, we are told to unlearn a lot of things we had learnt at school

It’s been four years of really awesome work-life (and it’s feels great to start the blog-post with a lie).

At work, I’ve learnt a lot of things, far more than what I had learnt in the 16 years of schooling. Actually, at times, I have had problems at work because of certain things I had learnt at school. That is, my colleagues/bosses told me “forget about what you learnt at school, that’s not how it works in the real-world". Not just that, I’ve written standardized tests in which I had to unlearn what I had learnt in school coz what’s taught in school is ideal but not always accepted in the real-world.

Education is supposed to ready us for the real-world or for the ideal world? It really sucks when we have to unlearn the things we have been doing for the past 20 years. Learning new stuff is a lot easier than unlearning the old stuff. Anyways, I don’t feel too strongly about my opinion because I hadn’t been good at school (or may be, the school wasn’t so good to me). So, probably, schools are readying kids for the real-world as well as the ideal world. But, if you were great at school, and still you get to hear from others that you need to unlearn the things you learnt at school, then there is a big problem in the way kids are taught at school.
